Delivery boys get set to deliver La Traduccion,
a newspaper that began publishing in Ybor
City in 1903. |
"Some
of these newspapers haven't been seen since
they were published," said Ybor Museum
Outreach Director and exhibit curator,
Manny Leto. The historic newspapers on display
are available for study and research at the
University of South Florida's Department of
Special Collections, but they have never been
on view to the general public.
"For the first time,
we will get to see the events that shaped Tampa's
history as seen through the eyes of the people
who lived them," said
Leto.
The oldest newspaper on display will
be an 1893 copy of Cuba, a paper published
in Ybor City during Cuba's revolutionary
struggle against Spain. Literally hundreds
of newspapers circulated throughout Ybor
City over its 100-hundred year history.
The
exhibit can be seen until November 18,
2005, at the West Tampa Library, 2312
West Union St. It will be at the Ybor State
Museum on November 19, 2005, during the
Cigar Heritage Festival, then may be
seen at Internation Bazar in Centro Ybor, 1600
East 8th Avenue.
